Theory for ultrafast out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamic processes

Peter Oppeneer’s goal is to build a theoretical framework for fast non-equilibrium quantum dynamics based on material-specific calculations. This framework will then be applied to important, unsolved problems in non-equilibrium dynamics of solid materials.

Research on non-equilibrium quantum dynamics in solid materials is a prominent field in solid state physics. The goal of Peter Oppeneer and his research group is to create a theoretical framework based on material-specific calculations for understanding and manipulating fast dynamic processes. These processes, triggered by short external stimuli such as laser or electric pulses, can rapidly change the macroscopic state of materials.

One exciting discovery is that non-magnetic stimuli such as light can also influence the magnetic state of a material. This opens prospects of finding new ways of controlling the properties of materials in the fastest possible fashion.

New technological applications

Oppeneer and his team are working on new theoretical methods for describing these dynamic processes. Using material-specific calculations, they can accurately analyse and even design non-equilibrium dynamic processes in real materials. The results are expected not only to explain the properties of materials but also to contribute to ultrafast non-equilibrium science and new technological applications. One example is the development of information components that can operate considerably faster than previously, which could revolutionise electronics and other technological areas.
