New Mathematics with Old Roots

Eero Saksman is at present Professor at University of Helsinki, Finland. Thanks to a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, he will be Visiting Professor at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Lund University.

Professor Eero Saksman is one of the best mathematical analysts in Finland. His research interests are broad and include complex analysis, operator theory, geometric analysis, and probability. He is a leading expert on connections of Dirichlet series, introduced in the 19’th century by a German mathematician Lejeune Dirichlet, with complex analysis, and operator theory.

This has been an active area of research over the last 30 years even though its roots go much further back in time. It is based on important insights by a Danish mathematician, Harald Bohr who became interested in the problems connected to Dirichlet series at the beginning of 20’th century.

Many new ideas based on those insights have surfaced and many challenging problems have been solved over the past 100 years. A number of mathematicians have made contributions. Current research requires a combination of unconventional methods from several areas of mathematics including harmonic analysis, functional analysis, complex analysis, and analytic number theory. It assumes breadth of mathematical knowledge and cooperation of several researchers. Eero Saksman’s ability to combine methods of those and other branches of mathematics in creative and surprising ways makes him a very desirable research partner. Several mathematicians in Lund have already participated in successful joint research projects with Professor Saksman.
