In 2025 Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation awarded grants totalling over SEK 2.5 billion

During 2024 Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation awarded grants totaling over SEK 2.5 million (2024: 2.4) to individuals, various programs and projects.

Medicine, technology and natural sciences

The Foundation supports long-term, free basic research beneficial to Sweden, mainly in medicine, technology, and the natural sciences.

Grants 2025

27 Wallenberg Academy Fellows were appointed during the year. In total, 288 researchers have been appointed Wallenberg Academy Fellows since 2012. Including this year’s round, so far Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has allocated just over SEK 3.4 billion to the program.

Sixteen appointments were approved under the Mathematics program. The object of the program, which was initiated jointly with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, is to return Swedish research in mathematics to the international forefront. Including this year’s grants, 168 researchers have received funding since 2014.

In addition, 20 scholarships were granted within” The Wallenberg Foundation Postdoctoral Scholarship Program” at Stanford University, USA, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, Broad Institute, USA, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

During the year, 26 Proof-of-Concept grants were awarded within the 2024 calls of Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation's Proof-of-Concept program. Ten projects received grants within the call in life sciences, seven projects in AI and quantum technology and nine in materials science for sustainability. The grants aim to strengthen the path from academic research to innovation and commercial application.

In total 139 Proof-of-Concept grants have been awarded since 2017 totaling SEK 466 million.

The Foundation also continued to approve significant strategic grants in the fields of life sciences, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and sustainable materials.

MAX IV was awarded 200 million SEK from the Foundation and the WISE program for a new beamline, TomoWISE, to construct and establish a 3D imaging X-ray technology aimed at studying and developing advanced materials for the transition to a sustainable society.

Additionally, during the year SEK 50 million was awarded to a new research initiative on metabolism and obesity. The initiative includes a newly established professorship and research group with a total budget of SEK 200 million over ten years, starting in 2026. Behind the initiative is the University of Gothenburg and AstraZeneca, with the support of Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and RegionVästra Götaland.

Since 1917

Since the establishment in 1917, the Foundation has awarded grants of almost SEK 42 billion for projects, equipment, and individuals, including about SEK 10.8 billion over the past five years.

The Wallenberg Foundations

In 2025 the Wallenberg Foundations awarded grants totaling over SEK 3.1 billion.

“The Wallenberg Foundations” is the collective name for 16 foundations founded by or in memory of family members, of which the three largest are Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, that mainly supports social sciences and Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation, that focuses on humanities.
