What happens with democracy when it is threatened by unrest and violence?
This is a question that Wallenberg Scholar Hanne Fjelde is investigating. Around one out of five elections see significant levels of violence or intimidation where actors seek to influence the outcome of the elections. In 2024 barely 7 percent of the world's population lived in countries considered to be full democracies. And in recent years, this number has decreased.
Hanne Fjelde, Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, has for many years studied political violence around the world.
