As many as one in ten women suffer from the painful disease endometriosis. Wallenberg Scholar Mia Phillipson, a professor at Uppsala University, wants to change that. Through her research on how the uterus heals itself, she hopes to contribute to better treatments—and eventually help other organs heal more effectively as well.
The long-term goal is to develop local immunotherapies that prompt the immune cells in the uterine lining to behave as they do in a healthy uterus. But her research on immune cells may also have implications for other types of injuries, such as those that occur after a heart attack, where fast and effective healing is essential.
